Kimberley Chatfield, Chatfield Training - First Aid Ambassador

“I first met the Mothers Matter team when I delivered some free Paediatric First Aid Awareness sessions for them in early 2024. I was absolutely blown away by the level of support they offer to families, and in particular, their focus on perinatal mental health and wellbeing. Some of my closest friends and family members have struggled with difficulties surrounding pregnancy and birth – I remember the significant challenges my own Mum faced, too, but public awareness and support in the 90’s was virtually non-existent. Now, thankfully, things are changing, and in no small part because of the wonderful work of organisations like Mothers Matter!

I’m absolutely thrilled to be an ambassador for Mothers Matter. To see first-hand the incredible, inspiring and empowering work they do in Rhondda Cynon Taf and far beyond is wonderful, and the standard they set is one which I hope can be mirrored more broadly in services throughout the UK. I am thrilled to support them in delivering paediatric first aid courses to parents and families.”

Jess Halfpenny

“I’m a Mum of two young girls and know how vital it is to have that support around you before during and after birth. I experienced a very traumatic birth with my second daughter.  Although I was fortunate enough to have my village around me supporting us through that time, I couldn’t help but think of the parents who experience trauma who don’t have the same support. So when I saw the incredible work Mothers Matter were doing for families in South Wales, Iwas thrilled to be able to help and come on board as an ambassador.
The support that Mothers Matter provide is life changing for the women and families they help.  I’ve been blown away by the staff’s dedication and passion and I’m honoured to be a small part of it. I hope by raising awareness and sharing my story, it can help other people not feel alone.

We talk a lot about postnatal depression and anxiety, but OCD in new mums is still so misunderstood. And because of that, so many women suffer in silence, terrified of what their thoughts might mean.I want to say this clearly first:having intrusive thoughts does not mean you want to harm your baby.OCD in motherhood often shows up quietly. It doesn’t always look like cleaning or organising. It lives in the mind. For many new mums, OCD starts with unwanted, intrusive thoughts. Thoughts that feel shocking, upsetting, frightening, and completely against who you are. They can come out of nowhere and stick like glue.Common triggers can include: • Becoming a mum (especially after loss or trauma)• Being alone with your baby• Sleep deprivation• Hormonal changes• A strong sense of responsibility or fear of “getting it wrong”• Wanting to be a good mum at all costsThe first signs are often: • Repeated intrusive thoughts you can’t switch off• Constantly seeking reassurance (“Am I normal?” “Would I do this?”)• Avoiding certain situations (baths, stairs, knives, being alone)• Mental checking (“Did I think that on purpose?”)• Feeling intense guilt, shame, or fear about your thoughts• A deep fear of being judged or having your baby taken awayMany mums don’t speak up because they are scared of what professionals might think. So instead, they overcompensate. They become hyper-vigilant, exhausted, and emotionally drained, all while smiling on the outside.OCD feeds on silence. It grows when we believe we are the only ones thinking these things. You are not broken. You are not dangerous. You are not a bad mum.You are a mum whose brain is stuck in a fear loop and that can be helped. If this resonates, please know support exists and recovery is possible. Talking about it doesn’t make it real. It makes it manageable. And if you’re reading this thinking, “This is me, but I’ve never said it out loud” you are not alone. Not here. Not ever.Mothers Matter are here for you#perinatalocd #perinatalsupport #youarenotalone #youarenotgoingcrazy ... See MoreSee Less
